The Grand European Motorhome Tour

Hi there — we’re Raz, Gabby, and the twins, and we’re so excited to have you join us on a journey we’ve been dreaming about for years: our epic motorhome tour of Europe.

Why this blog?

This blog is focused not just on the destinations and the stories about them but on the technical set up, the bureaucracy around caravans or motorhomes, gadgets, why less is sometimes more, how to prepare for the unforeseen circumstances, the important information that YOU will need to make your dream road trip a reality. I hope you will find the information in these blogs useful and learn from my mistakes and experiences so you will have a much smoother experience. My friends find it amazing how I am brutally honest and say things as they are so do expect the same in these blogs, I believe that being honest and providing the information to all the stakeholders as it is makes for better efficiency and makes teams stronger. You and I are now a team so let's go get our dreams together!

Like many of you, our passion for travel was reignited during the pandemic, when being stuck indoors reminded us just how much we crave freedom, exploration, and the open road. That’s when the seed was planted — and over the last 3–4 years, we’ve been planning, saving, researching, and preparing for this adventure of a lifetime.

For me (Raz), the love of the outdoors runs deep. It all started when I was just six years old, on a wild fishing trip with my dad in Romania’s Danube Delta. We camped for three weeks on a remote island, far from any town or shop. We lived off the land — catching fish, cooking over a fire, and immersing ourselves in nature. That experience lit a spark in me that never went out. Since then, I’ve been obsessed with camping, bushcraft, fishing, and off-grid living — and now I’m passing that love of the outdoors on to my kids.

Gabby, my wife, is no stranger to travel either. She’s a globe-trotter with adventure in her blood, and together we make a pretty unstoppable team. We believe that travel is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children — it teaches resilience, curiosity, respect for nature, and an appreciation for different ways of life.

The twins have been traveling with us since before they could walk, and seeing the world through their eyes is one of the most rewarding parts of this journey. We’re so excited to show them Europe — from alpine peaks to Mediterranean beaches, historic cities to quiet countryside — all from the cozy, ever-changing comfort of our motorhome.

Through this blog, we’ll be sharing our highs, lows, lessons learned, and the magical moments in between. We hope our story inspires you to chase your own dreams, whether that means hitting the road, exploring new cultures, or just finding new ways to connect with your family and the great outdoors.

So buckle up, come along for the ride, and let’s see where the road takes us. Adventure awaits!

Why We Chose to Travel Around Europe in a Motorhome

For us, travelling by motorhome was the obvious choice. Europe is a continent rich in culture, nature, and diversity — but it’s in the smaller towns, the remote villages, and the quiet countryside where its true magic lies. A motorhome gives us the freedom to explore these hidden gems, to wake up beside a lake one day and under alpine peaks the next, to smell the forest in the morning and cook breakfast as birds sing outside our window. It’s a fully immersive way to travel — we’re not just passing through, we’re living in it.

Beyond the travel experience itself, the motorhome has brought us closer as a family. Living in a small space teaches you a lot — how to share, how to be patient, how to make the most of what you have. We’ve learned to optimise every drawer, every surface, and every spare moment. It’s not just about going places, it’s about learning how to live simply and stay connected — with each other and with the world around us.

We chose a motorhome over a caravan for many practical reasons, which I’ll share in detail in future posts, but in short: for a trip like ours, the mobility, ease, and comfort of a motorhome just made more sense.

How Did We Do It?

Like any big dream, this one came with a lot of research and planning. We dove deep into the laws around motorhome travel in Europe, visa requirements, road rules, overnight parking laws, tolls, insurance, and everything in between. We mapped out possible routes, looked into campsite options, fuel costs, food budgets, and even considered the seasons. And here’s the surprising part — after crunching the numbers, we realised that it’s actually cheaper to travel through Europe in a motorhome than it is to stay put and pay rent, utilities, daycare, and general living expenses in Australia. More on those numbers in future blog posts.

Why Now?

Timing was everything. The twins are in that perfect sweet spot — just old enough to remember this adventure, but not yet in school. Once the school years begin, we’ll be tied to school terms and holiday windows like everyone else. If we were ever going to make this happen, now was the moment. We knew that if we didn’t take the leap, we’d look back and regret missing this precious window of freedom.

How’s It Going So Far?

In a word — incredible. It hasn’t all been smooth sailing, of course. The beginning was chaotic, stressful, and full of steep learning curves. We had to adjust quickly to life on the road, living in close quarters, managing logistics in multiple languages, and even driving a large vehicle through narrow medieval streets! But now, we’ve found our rhythm. The days are full, the views are ever-changing, and the memories we’re making are priceless. This journey is everything we hoped it would be — and more.
